For tourists who hate tourists

The places we’re going to, you don’t feel we’re going to run into another tour group… We end up in these kind of out-of-the-way places that you’d never have found if you were just on your own.

If I went by myself and I planned this out, I wouldn’t know what to do. And I would probably be doing really boring stuff that I’m sure is safe, very touristy things. But because Matt is the one that organized it, and he’s so educated on everything, we’ve just had so many different adventures…

So, this tour I love. We’re not going to the huge touristy spots, which is nice, because we get this really unique and special perspective of the culture and the community here. Detour totally lives up to its name – it’s like, off the beaten path.

What’s the best part?

My favorite part of the tour is just getting to see different things… We’ve just had so many different adventures and different variations of places that we get to go.

My favorite part of the tour has been the bonding of the group, while we’ve been traveling here or there… I think Matt has done a really great job introducing and blending new members to the group.

My favorite part, besides all the fun activities, is: I don’t have to drive, and I don’t have to think, and I don’t have to do anything. It’s all done for me, and it’s all perfect and wonderful!

The food’s been my favorite part probably of the trip.

I never had been on a tour on any of the other trips that I’ve taken. So that has been amazing, having someone who knows what they’re doing and where they’re going, and has some ideas plotted out already. And having a group that you’re going with has been a lot of fun.

I have been on a group tour to Rome and Paris. This tour was by far the best tour… It was well organized, which left time for me to just enjoy the sights and adventures. It was a small group so there weren’t long waiting periods for others to get ready.

I’ve taken one other guided tour, a while back. It was different because we didn’t interact with each other. We were in this huge bus, and we didn’t even talk to the tour guide… It wasn’t fun. And I kind of wish it was something like this… And then even compared to vacations that I’ve taken on my own, that I’ve organized, it’s a lot more worry free, because I don’t have to do the driving, organizing… It’s like, “Here, Matt will take care of it all.” And I like that!

You feel even though you’re on a tour, it’s almost like you’re going with friends. Or you almost think you’ve planned the trip, because it is so small scale. And you kind of forget, oh, we didn’t book this hotel, someone did that. And we didn’t have to find this place, Matt already checked it out. So there’s the professionalism, but on a more intimate and smaller scale.

Traveling with the group, I haven’t felt like I have to do something if I don’t want to. The activities that are planned, I think it’s a really good mix of learning about the place you’re visiting, having some fun, having some down time. It’s been a good balance, a really nice pace, and away from the crowds.

The group is awesome! I would say it’s great energy, good vibe. And there’s definitely times we break off and do our own thing, and come together and we have great stories to share. And we’re laughing, and it’s fun. Everybody’s pretty laid back, which is important to me when I’m traveling.

It’s a really diverse group. And it’s just like, you could be my friends back in Austin…

I was a little bit iffy at first, because I didn’t know who we’re going with, what’s it gonna be like. The only person I knew was [boyfriend] Caleb. I didn’t know Matt. Everybody’s very chill, and we get along great. I think Matt knows how to put groups together, so it’s been a great experience. Very happy about it. Even if [Caleb] weren’t here, I would feel comfortable, just coming by myself. And that’s saying a lot.

Who’s this Matt character?

Ruth

Matt has a lot of intention behind what he does. He wanted to know what people appreciate about travel, before we came in, and I feel like I’ve seen some of [our answers] infused within the trip. So he’s gonna take in what it is that you want. And he has a lot of fun with it.

Jackie

Matt’s really easy-going, very friendly, knowledgeable… and just flexible, so if you want to do something else, he’s supportive.

Erin

I would say he’s so easy to get along with, very laid back, but he really tries to keep us on task too, so we’re not missing out on some of the opportunities he has for us.

Monica

How would I explain Matt to other people? He’s a very approachable gentleman, a guy that’s invested. And you can tell he’s enjoying what he’s doing. So when you’re asking for things, he seems to really enjoy making sure everybody’s happy.

Liz

How would I describe Matt? He is flexible, reasonable, and has really great ideas for trips. He’s very much about making sure that we’re respectful to the community that we’re visiting. I think that’s huge. And also, when he needs to make an executive decision, he does that, and it’s okay!

Nikki

He’s fun, he’s easy to talk to, he’s outgoing, he is very caring, and you know if there’s a problem he’s gonna fix it. I have a food sensitivity, and he’s been really on top of it all. So I’m really comfortable and really at ease, and I don’t have any worries.
